Last week's African tech news was defined by capital finding new routes into the continent's businesses. AI-driven healthcare drew large cheques, a Moroccan healthtech deal landed, a $200M credit backstop fund was announced for Nigerian SMEs, and one of Africa's best-known payment companies pushed toward a New York listing. Beyond funding, Kenyan lawmakers turned their attention to consumer credit, while Cassava Technologies deepened Africa's AI infrastructure. Here is what mattered.

Healthleap raises $38M for AI clinical screening

South African-founded Healthleap raised $38M in total: an $8M seed co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, and a $30M Series A led by Hummingbird Ventures. Its software reviews hospital patients' electronic health records to flag those at risk of conditions such as malnutrition and delirium, and it plans to cover more than 40 conditions. The company, now headquartered in San Francisco, says its platform raised identified and treated malnutrition cases by 39% at one health system (a company-reported figure). It shows African-founded AI companies drawing tier-one global investors. Cascador and Sterling Bank launch a $200M SME backstop fund

Cascador and Nigeria's Sterling Bank launched a $200M credit backstop fund designed to support up to $1B in bank loans. The fund partially covers lenders' losses on defaults, with businesses nominated by VC firms and startup studios initially able to borrow up to $250K in local currency. It extends a 2025 partnership that was limited to Cascador alumni. If it works, it could ease one of the biggest constraints on Nigerian startups and SMEs: access to affordable bank credit. OPay's U.S. IPO filing draws scrutiny

OPay's Form F-1, filed with the U.S. SEC on October 9 for a proposed NYSE listing, drew attention last week over employee equity. The filing says no broad-based employee equity programme existed until April 2026, when about 9.1% of share capital was reserved through a trustee, with no awards granted yet. The IPO size and price were not disclosed. As one of Nigeria's biggest fintechs heads toward public markets, its governance disclosures will shape how African listings are judged. Morocco's ABA Life lands a $40M investment

Moroccan healthtech ABA Life secured $40M from Admaius Capital Partners, with the deal still subject to approval by Morocco's Competition Council. It was the largest African deal in the week's funding tally and a rare North African healthtech raise of this size. Cassava adds NVIDIA Nemotron models to its AI Factory

Cassava Technologies added NVIDIA's Nemotron models to its AI Factory, offered through its CAIMEx multi-model API platform, along with NVIDIA OpenShell technology for more controlled execution of AI agents. The move gives African businesses and developers locally hosted access to advanced reasoning models, though adoption still depends on affordability and connectivity. Kenyan lawmakers target buy-now-pay-later practices

Kenya's National Assembly Finance and National Planning Committee, chaired by Kuria Kimani, said it will question the Central Bank of Kenya and financing companies on consumer protection in BNPL and instalment credit, especially motorcycle asset financing, after borrower complaints about repayment costs. The firms named in the wider market, including Lipa Later and M-KOPA, are not accused of wrongdoing. The probe signals tighter oversight of non-bank lenders now under expanded CBK powers.
